Welcome to Steve Katz's America
|
Home is Brooklyn, N.Y. just about where the Ice Sheet of the last great Ice Age stopped its southern course, 18,000 years ago. Just across the street from Prospect Park where in the first summer of the revolution the Battle of Brooklyn was fought. Not far from where soldiers from Maryland and Delaware through their courage and sacrifice prevented the British from destroying Washington's Army and ending the revolution. Not far from a stone church a stop on the Underground Railroad. Not far from where Lincoln spoke and said that "Right Makes Might". Not far from where Walt Whitman wrote of his love for America. Not far from where my grandfather set foot in America after walking across Europe at thirteen years of age .Not far from where the Brooklyn Dodgers played their first game. Not far from the Brooklyn Army Terminal where my four uncles left to fight in Europe. Not far from where the Battleships Iowa and Missouri were built at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Not far from Fort Hamilton where I was inducted into the Army. Not far from where restaurants serve every type of food on earth. Not far from where the enemies of the fight for human dignity killed three thousand Americans. I am surrounded by the The Collective Consciousness that is America. I hope through my photographic art to glorify America its people, values and institutions.
